Well, it’s been over a year since I last posted… things have been done but not as much as planned. I ended up teaching a course in the fall, it was my first time so it really messed up my work schedule (and life in general). I’ll be better at managing my time next time if I get the opportunity to teach again – which I hope I do.

In addition to getting a few spaces modelled and imported into Unity, I also made a short teaser as a temporary opening cutscene or teaser trailer. Basically sets the scene for the game. I haven’t imported the environment into Unity yet, but it will be the first space the player enters.

What I have so far :

  • 2 environments imported into unity
  • 1 environment modelled
  • approximately what will and won’t be included in demo
  • ideas for gameplay mechanics

What I need to do:

  • prepare new environment for unity
  • import new environment to unity
  • maybe model one more space and import into unity
  • write content

So I’ve been getting a better idea of the scope of the project and the programming necessary. I’ve scared myself and so I am going to pivot for a little bit and work on something a little more in my wheelhouse, I think changing gears will help me build some confidence, and break up the new things a bit – I need to learn how to make cutscenes!

The new idea is really just an old idea refined a little bit called DEEP SLEEP (I’m not committing to this being the final title but this is what I’ve been calling it since the beginning.) It is an interactive VR film – sort of like a choose your own adventure based on an idea I had in… 2019 probably. Anyway, It’s a much smaller and more discrete project so I think it will be nice to have something small and complete before making a demo for a project that feels very big. Will post more about it later probably.
